How To Get Rid Of Acne

Acne is the most widespread skin condition in the United States. It seems that every magazine and celebrity has their own method for treating acne. In our office we see patients on a daily basis who have tried every trick in the book, but are still struggling.
An evaluation by a licensed dermatologist to properly diagnose your acne type is the critical step that most people are missing when they turn to the internet for help. It is very important to know your exact condition before selecting a course of treatment.
Acne vulgaris – this is the type of acne that many adolescents experience as they are going through puberty. It is characterized by pimples and pustules that result from hair follicles becoming inflamed and clogged – this inflammation leads to the redness around the bumps. This type of acne most often appears on the face, but can also affect the chest, back, shoulders, and other areas.
Cystic acne – also called nodulocystic acne, is more severe than its more common counterpart. It more often affects male patients, and often leads more frequently to scarring. Topical treatments like creams and ointments are usually not as effective for this type of acne, so it is vital to work out a treatment plan with your doctor. For patients who experience significant scarring, our microneedling procedure can help to restore skin to its original condition. Click here to learn more.
Comedonal acne – this type of acne is also quite common, but should not be confused with acne vulgaris. Comedonal acne is characterized by whiteheads and blackheads, and often affects the forehead, chin, and nose areas.Whiteheads are hair follicles that have become completely blocked, while blackheads are still open but have turned dark due to the pigment at the surface of the skin (not from dirt!). Topical treatments can be quite effective with this type of acne, especially in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular use of a good skin cleanser.
Each of these conditions is slightly different, and therefore needs a different approach to treatment and prevention. Please call our office to schedule an appointment to discuss your questions with ss and to develop an individualized treatment plan.
