How to Prevent Melanoma in Sunny Florida

Girl in bikini at beach applying sunscreen to protect from melanoma.Living in Jacksonville Beach means year-round sunshine, outdoor fun, and long days spent near the water. But with all that sun comes a serious concern: melanoma.

Skin cancer detection and treatment are a key part of what we do at Jacksonville Beach Dermatology.  Our team includes board-certified dermatologists David Murray, MD, and Frank Don, OD. Dr. Murray offers decades of experience and research-backed training, including work funded by the American Cancer Society. Dr. Don brings additional expertise in dermatology and family medicine. Together, they take melanoma prevention very seriously.

Florida residents face more UV exposure than most, which naturally increases the risk of melanoma. Whether you’re enjoying a walk in Neptune Beach or working outside, protecting your skin is something you should think about every day.

Start With the Basics

One of the simplest ways to lower your risk is to wear sunscreen daily. A broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 is the best choice, even on cloudy days. If you’re sweating or swimming, you’ll need to reapply every two hours. Don’t forget the easy-to-miss spots like your ears, the back of your neck, and the tops of your feet.

Hats, UV-blocking sunglasses, and lightweight clothing with sleeves make a big difference, too. And if you can, stay in the shade between 10 AM and 4 PM, when the sun’s rays are strongest.

Keep an Eye on Your Skin

Pay attention to any changes in your skin so you can catch potential melanoma early. A yearly full-body skin exam with one of our board-certified dermatologists will allow us to detect spots that don’t look quite right, even before you notice them.

Local Experts Who Know Florida Skin

If it’s time for your annual exam or you just have questions about sunscreen and sun safety, Dr. Don and Dr. Murray can walk you through it.
