The Different Types of Hyperhidrosis Explained

Person with sweaty hands due to hyperhidrosisSweating helps keep your body cool, but hyperhidrosis causes excessive sweating even when you aren’t hot or active. Understanding which type of hyperhidrosis you have can help determine the most effective treatment. Learning the differences can also help you know when it’s time to see a dermatologist.

At Jacksonville Beach Dermatology in Jacksonville Beach, FL, board-certified dermatologists Dr. Adam ChahineDr. Angelia Stepien, and Dr. Frank Don provide expert care for hyperhidrosis and other skin conditions. They proudly serve Jacksonville Beach and nearby Neptune Beach.

What Is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis causes excessive sweating beyond what your body needs to regulate its temperature. It most often affects the underarms, hands, feet, and face and can interfere with everyday activities. There are two main types of hyperhidrosis, and identifying the right one helps guide treatment.

Primary Hyperhidrosis

Primary hyperhidrosis is the most common type. It usually begins during childhood or the teenage years and often runs in families. It isn’t caused by another health condition. Instead, the nerves that activate your sweat glands become overly active.

Primary hyperhidrosis usually affects both sides of the body equally, such as both hands or both feet. Many people experience excessive sweating in the palms, soles, underarms, or face.

Secondary Hyperhidrosis

Secondary hyperhidrosis develops because of an underlying medical condition or as a side effect of certain medications. It often begins in adulthood and may affect larger areas of the body rather than a single location.

Some possible causes include:

  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Hormonal changes
  • Certain medications
  • Neurologic conditions

Unlike primary hyperhidrosis, secondary hyperhidrosis may also cause sweating while you’re sleeping. Treating the underlying cause can often improve the excessive sweating.

When Should You See a Dermatologist?

Occasional sweating is normal, but excessive sweating that disrupts your daily life deserves medical attention. A dermatologist can determine which type of hyperhidrosis you have and recommend appropriate treatment.

It may be time to schedule an evaluation if:

  • Your sweating interferes with work or school.
  • Your hands stay too wet to grip objects comfortably.
  • You frequently change clothes because of sweat.
  • You avoid social situations due to excessive sweating.
  • Store-bought antiperspirants haven’t helped.
